What happened
The Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, asserting that the colonies were free and independent states no longer bound to the British crown.
Why it matters
This event gave the war a clear political objective and changed its meaning internationally. It also helped create the diplomatic basis on which foreign powers, especially France, could later support the American side.
