What happened
Fascist Italy attacked Ethiopia in pursuit of imperial expansion, using overwhelming force to destroy one of the few remaining independent African states.
Why it matters
The invasion is one of the clearest demonstrations that the interwar collective-security system was failing. Sanctions were weak, enforcement was limited, and the lesson absorbed by revisionist powers was that aggression could succeed.
