What happened

Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China after communist victory in the Chinese Civil War, while the Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan.

Why it matters

The Chinese Revolution radically enlarged the communist camp in demographic and geopolitical terms. It changed American threat perception, intensified Asian Cold War conflict, and made the Cold War decisively global.
